Trump’s Former Economic Adviser Slams His Tariffs as ‘Misguided’ and Harmful to Economy

Even Donald Trump’s former economic adviser, Stephen Moore, is publicly condemning the former president’s disastrous tariff policies, calling them “misguided” and warning they could further destabilize an already “very wobbly economy.” The criticism came during an interview with Fox News host Katie Pavlich, where Moore expressed deep concerns about the impact of Trump’s reckless economic maneuvers.

Moore noted the erratic nature of Trump’s tariff announcements, which have thrown markets into turmoil. “You used the word ‘complicated,’ and that’s exactly what it has been over the last week, Katie,” he said. “One day the tariffs are going to go up and then there’s going to be a delay in the tariffs and then there’s going to be a tariff on another country, and it’s been up and down and up and down.”

The chaotic policy rollout has already inflicted damage. Trump initially imposed a destructive 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico, only to delay them when the stock market plummeted and consumer prices surged. Moore highlighted how these erratic moves have rattled investor confidence, stating, “And by the way, the stock market went up and down and up and down with these things.”

The former adviser didn’t hold back in his criticism of Trump’s economic strategy, saying, “I think that the president’s emphasis on tariffs right now is misguided.”

Moore pointed to troubling economic indicators, warning that the country is on shaky ground. “I think we have a very wobbly economy,” he said. “We saw a not very good jobs report on Friday. The consumer confidence numbers are sinking. And other indicators are not positive.”

He then made it clear that tariffs are not the answer to the nation’s economic woes. “The economy needs a pick-me-up, and tariffs are not a pick-me-up,” Moore said.

However, true to his conservative ideology, Moore quickly pivoted to advocating for more tax cuts for the wealthy—demonstrating that despite recognizing Trump’s economic failures, he remains committed to the same failed Republican trickle-down policies that have repeatedly widened inequality and hurt working-class Americans.

The fact that even Moore, one of Trump’s staunchest economic allies, is now speaking out against these tariffs speaks volumes. Trump’s reckless trade war is poised to do severe damage, and the American people will be the ones paying the price—literally. It’s time to acknowledge that Republican economic policies are a disaster and demand leadership that prioritizes stability and prosperity for all, not just the ultra-wealthy.
