March 24, 2025 – Maine Governor Janet Mills is not backing down after former President Donald Trump demanded a “full-throated apology” for publicly challenging him at the White House. Instead of bowing to his demands, Mills hit back hard, calling out Trump’s hypocrisy and failure to deliver real policies for the American people.
Mills Takes a Stand Against Trump
At an event in Bangor, Maine, Mills made it clear that she won’t be intimidated by Trump’s demands.
🔹 “If the current occupant of the White House wants to protect women and girls, he should start by protecting those suffering miscarriages and dying because they can’t get basic, life-saving health care,” she said, referring to the crisis in reproductive rights under Trump’s policies.
🔹 “If he truly cares about women and girls, let’s see the economic plan. Let’s see the health care plan. Let’s see the education plan,” she continued, calling out Trump’s lack of substantive policy while he fixates on culture wars.
Mills also took a direct shot at Trump’s social media outbursts, making it clear she does not engage in policy debates on his terms:
🔹 “I don’t communicate with public officials by social media,” she stated. “The Constitution does not permit Trump to make laws out of gold cloth or by tweet, Instagram posts, press releases, or executive orders.”
Trump’s Demand for an Apology
Trump’s demand for an apology came after Mills confronted him during a White House meeting of governors. When Trump threatened to cut federal funding to states that opposed his trans athlete ban, Mills didn’t hesitate—she boldly declared, “See you in court.”
In response, Trump lashed out on Truth Social, calling her stance “unlawful” and demanding that she never challenge his authority again.
Of course, Mills is well within her rights to challenge the federal government, and Trump’s authoritarian reaction exposes the hypocrisy of his so-called support for “states’ rights.”
